This devotional film tells the story of Gyaneshwar (Dnyaneshwar), the poet-saint of Maharashtra's Varkari tradition, and his siblings, who were shunned by the orthodox society of their time because their father had returned to family life after taking sannyas. Despite humiliation, the children grow in wisdom and devotion, and Gyaneshwar goes on to compose the Dnyaneshwari, his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, which remains a cornerstone of Marathi literature. The film is best remembered for its music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, one of their early successes, and above all for the prayer song "Jyot Se Jyot Jagaate Chalo", with lyrics by Bharat Vyas, still sung at schools and gatherings across India. Mahesh Kothare, later a well-known Marathi director, appears as a child actor.
