Samar is a student with big dreams when his family marries him off to Prabha, an educated young woman. Resentful at being trapped, and goaded by relatives who find fault with her at every turn, he shuts her out entirely; the two live under one roof in a crowded joint family in Agra without exchanging a word, while the household's money troubles and petty cruelties close in around them. Sara Akash was Basu Chatterjee's first film, made on a small budget with government film-finance support, and it became one of the founding works of the Indian new wave. It is based on Rajendra Yadav's Hindi novel. K. K. Mahajan's black-and-white camera, shooting in real Agra homes and lanes, won the Filmfare award for cinematography, and Salil Chowdhury provided the sparse score.
