Savere Wali Gaadi (1986)

Savere Wali Gaadi ("the morning train") is one of the few Hindi films made by Tamil director Bharathiraja, whose rural love stories reshaped Tamil cinema in the late 1970s. It is generally described as a Hindi version of his Tamil film Kizhakke Pogum Rail, transplanting a tale of young love in a tradition-bound village, and the train that links it to the outside world, into a Hindi setting. Sunny Deol, then a few years into his career and better known for action, plays a gentler romantic lead here opposite Poonam Dhillon. The film is a chance to see Bharathiraja's feel for village life, festivals and landscapes in a Hindi film, and an early-career Sunny Deol in an unusual register.
