Meera works as a makeup artist in Chennai and has kept her distance from her grandmother, who raised her in a village in southern Tamil Nadu. When she comes back home, the old woman is preoccupied with death, both her own and the elaborate customs of the funerals around her, and the two women slowly reopen the hurts between them. The film looks with humour and tenderness at the way rural communities mourn, from the mourning songs to the dressing of the dead, and at a granddaughter learning what she owes the woman who brought her up. Sethum Aayiram Pon (from the Tamil saying that an elephant is worth a thousand gold coins even in death) is a small, gentle independent film carried by Srilekha Rajendran's performance as the grandmother.
