In 1947 Punjab is tearing itself apart. Boota Singh, a shy, middle-aged former soldier who has never married, rescues Zainab, a young Muslim woman left behind as her family flees to Pakistan, from men who mean her harm. Out of that act of mercy grows a marriage and a deep love, and a daughter, until the governments of the two new nations begin searching for abducted women to return them across the border. Based on a real story from Partition, the film is a tender, heartbreaking romance in which the politics of the age arrive like weather over a small village life. Punjabi singer-actor Gurdas Maan gives a moving, restrained performance, and Divya Dutta made her mark as Zainab. It won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi, and the same true story later inspired Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
