Shaheed Udham Singh (2000)

Raj Babbar plays Udham Singh, the Punjabi revolutionary who witnessed the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in April 1919, when British troops fired on a peaceful crowd. The film follows how that day shaped the rest of his life: his wanderings across continents, his links with the freedom movement and his long resolve to answer for the dead. History records that in 1940 he shot Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London, and was hanged for it, and the film builds towards that act and his trial. Gurdas Maan and Amrish Puri lead a large supporting cast. It is a patriotic period drama made in Hindi and Punjabi, and an earlier screen take on the story later told in Shoojit Sircar's Sardar Udham (2021).
