Shahid Azmi grew up in Mumbai, lived through the riots of 1992-93, drifted briefly towards militancy in Kashmir and then spent years in Tihar jail under anti-terror law. In prison he decided to study, and after his release he became a lawyer who took on the cases of Muslims he believed had been wrongly accused of terrorism, winning acquittals while drawing hostility from many sides. The film follows him from these beginnings through his marriage, his courtroom battles and the toll his work took on his family. Shahid had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012. Rajkummar Rao won the National Film Award for Best Actor and Hansal Mehta the award for Best Director, and the film revived Mehta's career and launched Rao's.
