Ashok is the friend every lovesick couple wants: whenever two young people are kept apart by their families, he steps in with schemes, daring and plenty of mischief to get them married. Yet when he falls deeply for a girl himself, he cannot bring himself to tell her, and the closer he comes to confessing, the more fate seems to get in the way. Shahjahan, named after the emperor who built the Taj Mahal for his love, is one of Vijay's romantic films from the early 2000s, made before he settled into full-time action-hero roles. Mani Sharma's soundtrack, especially the melody "Melliname Melliname", was a big hit, and the comedian Vivek supplies the laughs.
