Shikast (1953)

Shikast ("defeat") is a 1953 social drama directed by Ramesh Saigal, starring Dilip Kumar at the height of his early-1950s fame alongside Nalini Jaywant and Durga Khote. Set largely in a village, it deals with love, wounded pride and the rivalries that divide families and communities, themes that suited Dilip Kumar's brooding, restrained style of the period. Shankar-Jaikishan composed the music. It is one of the less-revived Dilip Kumar films of the decade and will interest viewers exploring his work beyond the best-known classics.
