J. K. Balaganapathy (JKB) is a celebrated classical singer whose devoted wife Bhairavi cannot share his world of music. When Sindhu, a spirited young music teacher, publicly questions why classical concerts ignore songs in the people's own language, JKB is first angered and then fascinated, and a deep bond forms between them that society will not easily accept. K. Balachander handles the triangle with sensitivity and refuses easy villains. Sindhu Bhairavi is one of the landmark Tamil films of the 1980s: Suhasini won the National Film Award for Best Actress, Ilaiyaraaja won the National Award for his score, and K. S. Chithra won Best Female Playback Singer for "Paadariyen Padippariyen". Its songs remain classics. This page is for the Tamil film.
