Soodhu Kavvum (2013)

Das runs a modest kidnapping business with a code of ethics: no violence, no big shots, no greed. His only companion is Shalu, a girlfriend who exists only in his head. When three friends who have lost their jobs join him, the gang is persuaded to break the rules and kidnap the son of an honest, stubborn minister, a plan that immediately spirals out of control as a merciless "encounter specialist" policeman is put on their trail. Nalan Kumarasamy's debut is one of the defining Tamil films of the 2010s: a deadpan black comedy that turned crime and politics into absurd satire. It helped make Vijay Sethupathi a star, introduced Bobby Simha, and its offbeat score by Santhosh Narayanan was widely praised. It was remade in Telugu as Gaddam Gang.
