In the India of the 1980s, a small team led by the cool-headed Ajay Singh and the nervous family man P. K. Sharma has perfected a remarkable trick: posing as officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation, they conduct fake raids on politicians and businessmen with black money, who are too frightened to report what has been taken. As their last job they plan a raid on a famous jewellery store in Bombay, recruiting their own "special 26" officers through a newspaper advertisement, while a real CBI officer, Waseem Khan, and a humiliated Delhi policeman close in. Neeraj Pandey, director of A Wednesday!, based the story on the real 1987 Opera House heist in Bombay, which remains unsolved. The film was praised for its period detail and tight writing, and was remade in Tamil as Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (2018).
