Sri Raghavendrar tells the life of Raghavendra Swami, the 17th-century saint of the Madhva tradition whose shrine at Mantralayam draws pilgrims from across South India. The film follows him from his early life as Venkatanatha, a gifted scholar living in poverty with his wife, through his renunciation of family life and the miracles and teachings associated with him. Rajinikanth, himself a devotee of the saint, chose the role for his 100th film, an unusual departure from the action hero image he had built. It was produced by K. Balachander's Kavithalayaa and directed by S. P. Muthuraman, his most frequent director, with devotional songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Lakshmi plays his wife.
