Kancherla Gopanna is a tax collector under the Golconda kingdom in the seventeenth century, a man of deep devotion to Lord Rama. When he finds the shrine at Bhadrachalam in ruins, he spends the revenue he has gathered to build a great temple there, believing the god will make good the debt. The ruler, Tana Shah, has him thrown into prison, where he pours out his suffering and faith in the kirtanas that made him one of the best-loved composers of Telugu devotional song. Sri Ramadasu reunited Nagarjuna with director K. Raghavendra Rao after the devotional hit Annamayya, and Nagarjuna's father Akkineni Nageswara Rao appears as the saint Kabir. M. M. Keeravani's settings of Ramadasu's songs were very popular, and the film was a box-office success.
