Stanley is the life of his class: quick, funny and full of stories. But he never has a tiffin box, and at lunchtime he slips away or shares with friends. Babubhai Verma, a Hindi teacher with an enormous appetite, has the habit of helping himself to his pupils' lunches, and he decides that a boy with no dabba has no right to share his friends' food, either. Stanley's friends rally round, while the gentle English teacher, Rosy Miss, sees more in him than anyone. Amole Gupte, who wrote Taare Zameen Par, made the film over many months of Saturday workshops with real schoolchildren in Mumbai, filming only on weekends so that the children's studies were not disturbed, which gives the classroom scenes their unforced feel. His son Partho plays Stanley, and Gupte himself plays the hungry teacher.
