Anantha Rama Sarma is a celebrated Carnatic musician, honoured everywhere and used to deference. In a village he meets Gangadhar, a young boy with an extraordinary natural gift for music, who worships him and longs to be his student. Sarma's wife Sharada, who once gave up her own music for her husband, sees the boy's talent and takes him under her wing, but Sarma's admiration curdles into jealousy and he begins to undermine the child. Swathi Kiranam is K. Viswanath's study of artistic ego and envy, with Malayalam star Mammootty in a rare Telugu role and Master Manjunath, known as the boy from Malgudi Days, as Gangadhar. K. V. Mahadevan's classical score is central to the film, and Vani Jairam won the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for its songs.
