Sambaiah is a cobbler who takes pride in his work and believes that a man should live only by what his own hands earn. He brings up a young boy of the family with love, and Vijayashanti plays the spirited woman who shares his life. As the boy grows up, he is drawn to easier money and is ashamed of his uncle's trade, and Sambaiah's values are put to a painful test. Swayam Krushi ("self-effort") was a striking departure for Chiranjeevi, then at the height of his action stardom, playing an ordinary working man in a film by K. Viswanath, the master of humane Telugu cinema. Chiranjeevi won the Nandi Award for Best Actor for the role.
