Years ago a bitter quarrel split a powerful family in southern Tamil Nadu into two hostile households. Bharani, a hot-blooded young man who has grown up with the grudge, falls in love with Bhanu from the other side, and his attempts to win her reopen every old wound. Hari, the director of Saamy and Aaru, mixes his trademark speed and violence with a strong family drama, and the river that gives the film its name runs through the story. Nadhiya, the 1980s star who had returned with M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi, plays the proud matriarch, and the film introduced Muktha, credited as Bhanu, to Tamil audiences. Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs were popular, and the film was a solid hit for Vishal after Sandakozhi.
