Thai Jashe (2016)

Mehul and Sapna are a newly married middle-class couple in Ahmedabad who are tired of renting and decide to buy a flat. What follows is a very recognisable struggle: loans, builders, family advice nobody asked for, a job that suddenly looks less secure and a mountain of paperwork. The title means "It will happen", the stubbornly optimistic phrase Mehul keeps repeating as obstacles pile up. Thai Jashe was part of the new wave of urban Gujarati films that followed Chhello Divas, and it stars Malhar Thakar, who became one of the leading faces of that wave, with Monal Gajjar as his wife. It is a warm, humorous film with a strong sense of everyday middle-class life.
