Description

The film follows Manmohan Singh's first term as Prime Minister from 2004, as seen through the eyes of his media adviser Sanjaya Baru, who breaks the fourth wall to guide the audience through the corridors of power. It presents Singh as a decent, scholarly man caught between his own convictions and the influence of the party leadership, touching on episodes such as the Indo-US nuclear deal. The film is based on Baru's 2014 memoir of the same name and drew sharp political controversy on release in January 2019, months before the general election, with critics and supporters divided over its portrayal of real figures. Anupam Kher's transformation into Singh, in voice and gait, was widely discussed, as was Akshaye Khanna's sly narrator.
