In 1942, far from the front, Sergeant Vaskov commands a quiet railway post in Karelia, where his unit is made up of young women anti-aircraft gunners. When one of them spots two German soldiers in the forest, Vaskov sets out with five of the women to intercept them, only to find the enemy force is much larger than they thought. Through marshes and woods the small group fights on, and the war reaches each of their lives. Based on Boris Vasilyev's much-loved novella, this is a new screen version of the story famously filmed in the Soviet Union in 1972, retelling it with modern battle scenes for a new generation.
