The Tashkent Files (2019)

Ragini Phule, a political reporter desperate for a scoop, gets an anonymous tip about the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, who died in Tashkent in January 1966, hours after signing a peace agreement with Pakistan. Her story causes a storm, and the government sets up a committee of politicians, historians and activists to examine the case. Locked in debate with them, Ragini pursues the questions about the official cause of death, the absence of a post-mortem and the people who might have gained. The film presents one side of a long-running controversy, and its claims were disputed. It won National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Pallavi Joshi) and Best Dialogue, and was a surprise box-office success.
