Murugan tends goats in the rugged countryside near Theni, living with his mother Veerayi, a strong-willed widow who raised him alone and who has strict ideas about his future. When goats begin to vanish, Murugan clashes with a clan of livestock thieves, and falls in love with Pechi, a spirited young woman from that very family. The romance pits Murugan's heart against his mother's iron resolve and against the violent code of the girl's clan. Thenmerku Paruvakaatru ("south-west monsoon wind") was Vijay Sethupathi's first leading role, and the film won the National Film Award for best Tamil feature, with Saranya Ponvannan winning the National Award for best actress and Vairamuthu for best lyrics. Its earthy realism and the bond between mother and son are its heart.
