Chandran badly needs a job, and he gets one by impressing Sriramachandramoorthy, a wealthy, tradition-bound businessman who values simple, serious young men. When he is caught enjoying a football match he had skipped work for, Chandran claims it was his identical twin Indran, a modern, clean-shaven fellow, and soon he is living two lives, one with a moustache and one without, while falling in love with his boss's daughter. Thillu Mullu is K. Balachander's Tamil remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Hindi classic Golmaal (1979), and it showed Rajinikanth, then becoming an action star, as a gifted comedian. Kamal Haasan appears in a guest role, and the film was remade in Tamil in 2013 under the same title.
