Kathir and Azhagu are cheerful petty crooks who have grown up together and steal for fun as much as for money. Fleeing the police, they rescue Rasathi, a village girl escaping a forced marriage, and both of them fall for her. Their road trip collides with a far bigger crime when a glamorous singer, Chandralekha, turns up with a secret connected to a container of brand-new banknotes stolen from the Reserve Bank, and a ruthless mastermind and the police are all chasing the same prize. Thiruda Thiruda is Mani Ratnam's playful caper, a change of pace after Roja, with dazzling camerawork by P. C. Sreeram and one of A. R. Rahman's early landmark soundtracks, including "Chandralekha" and "Konjam Nilavu". It has since become a cult favourite.
