Jaya has grown up on the streets of Chennai with no family to speak of, and makes his living as a hired rowdy, the kind of man sent to frighten and hurt people for others. His hard, rootless life changes when he meets a young woman whose family is tied to a powerful and ruthless gangster, played by Pradeep Rawat. The romance that follows drags Jaya into a conflict far bigger than the street fights he is used to, and the film follows him as he tries to hold on to the one good thing in his life. Thotti Jaya gave Silambarasan one of his grittiest early roles, a change from his lover-boy image, and Harris Jayaraj's soundtrack was popular in its day. Malayalam actress Gopika plays the heroine.
