After their mother dies, a young boy is left to look after his sister alone. With no money and no one to turn to, he takes on any work he can find, faces cruelty and temptation, and refuses to give up on keeping her fed and safe. The title, "the storm and the lamp", captures the film's image of a small flame of goodness holding out against overwhelming odds. Toofan Aur Deeya was produced by V. Shantaram's Rajkamal Kalamandir and directed by Prabhat Kumar, with a young Nanda as the sister and Rajendra Kumar in an early role. Vasant Desai's music includes the well-known song "Nirbal Se Ladaai Balwaan Ki", sung by Manna Dey, which became a standard of inspirational Hindi film music.
