Silsila grew up at a traffic junction in Mumbai and now acts as its manager, collecting money from the beggars, flower sellers, eunuchs and children who work the cars, and passing it up to the local don. The signal is its own little world, with friendships, rivalries and love stories, including Silsila's romance with Noorie, who also makes her living at the junction. When powerful people decide the signal's activities must stop for their own ends, everyone's livelihood is at stake. Traffic Signal is part of Madhur Bhandarkar's series of realistic films about Mumbai, after Chandni Bar, Page 3 and Corporate, and it won him the National Film Award for Best Director.
