In 1920s Oklahoma, Cherokee Lansing's rancher father dies in a confrontation with an oil company whose wells are poisoning his cattle's water. Grief turns into ambition, and the part-Cherokee heiress sets out to beat the oilmen at their own game, drilling wells with the help of a geologist who loves her and her loyal childhood friend Jim Redbird. As her wealth grows, she risks becoming everything she once fought. Susan Hayward gives one of her vivid, strong-willed performances in this Technicolor drama about the oil boom, and the film's fiery climax earned it an Academy Award nomination for its special effects. It has become well known on home video since falling into the public domain.
