In a Kerala industrial town, workers are caught between the factory owners and union leaders who claim to fight for them while serving their own interests. A young worker played by Mohanlal becomes involved in the struggle and gradually discovers how deeply the union, management and local power brokers are tied together, and what speaking up will cost him and those close to him. Unaroo ("awaken") is the second film of director Mani Ratnam and his only Malayalam film; it came after his Kannada debut Pallavi Anu Pallavi and before he moved to Tamil cinema. It was written by T. Damodaran, known for political screenplays, and features an early Mohanlal in a serious lead role, with music by Ilaiyaraaja.
