Description

When the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama returns to the Malabar coast in 1502 and massacres a ship of pilgrims, young Kelu's father is among the dead. Kelu grows up wielding an urumi, a whip-like coiled sword, and with his friend Vavvali he leads a rebellion against the colonisers and the local rulers who trade with them. The story is framed by a modern-day descendant who is about to sell his ancestral land to a mining company. Santosh Sivan's lavish historical epic, which he also photographed, brought together a pan-Indian cast and showcased the Kerala martial art of kalaripayattu. It won Kerala State Film Awards and was praised for its visuals, its battle scenes and its questioning of how history is told.
