Deva and Shiva are identical twins. Deva, the elder, is deaf and mute but brilliant and successful, and he dotes on his younger brother. When Shiva marries Priya, Deva becomes secretly fixated on her, and his schemes to come between the couple grow ever more dangerous, while Priya realises before anyone else what is going on and has nobody who believes her. Vaalee was the debut of writer-director S. J. Suryah and a turning point for Ajith Kumar, whose performance as the menacing, wordless Deva won him wide acclaim. Simran won awards for her role as Priya, and Jyothika made her Tamil debut in a small part. The film was remade in Kannada as Vaali.
