Vaaname Ellai (1992)

Each of the young people in Vaaname Ellai ("the sky is the limit") has reached the end of their rope: one has been betrayed by family, another by love, another crushed by unemployment or by the hypocrisy of their elders. They meet, discover their shared despair and agree to end their lives together, but first retreat to a remote place where, living together, they begin to question their decision. K. Balachander uses the premise to examine the pressures facing young people in early-1990s India, with his usual mix of humour, sharp dialogue and social criticism. The songs were composed by Maragathamani, the name under which M. M. Keeravani worked in Tamil. This page is for the Tamil film.
