Set in a Kerala village in the 1980s, the film revolves around the local film theatre, the one place where the whole village comes together, and the young man connected to it. Kunchacko Boban plays the lead, whose romance with a young woman from a different background sets off rivalry and resistance among the villagers. Much of the film's charm lies in its period setting and its nostalgia for the era of single-screen touring cinemas and film-poster culture. It marked the return of former child star Shamili, famous for films such as Malootty and Anjali, as an adult heroine in Malayalam. Renji Panicker plays a key supporting role.
