Raghuvaran has a civil engineering degree and four years of unemployment, because he refuses to take jobs outside his field. At home he is the family disappointment, endlessly compared with his younger brother who works in IT, and only his mother stands by him. A personal loss and an unexpected opportunity put him in charge of a public housing project for slum dwellers, which makes him an enemy of Arun Subramaniam, the arrogant son of a big construction company owner. Velaiilla Pattadhari ("unemployed graduate", known as VIP) struck a chord with young audiences and became one of Dhanush's biggest hits. It was his 25th film and the directing debut of cinematographer Velraj. Anirudh's soundtrack, especially 'What a Karvaad' and the mother song 'Amma Amma', was hugely popular, and a sequel followed in 2017.
