Muthu lives with his mother in a dry village near Tirunelveli, scraping a living after a bush fire destroys their land. In search of work he goes to Mumbai and joins a crowd of Tamil migrants at a roadside eatery, only to discover that the shop is a front for a gang, and that loyalty here can be paid for in blood. Over time the shy village boy is drawn deeper into the underworld, while a tender romance with Paavai offers him another kind of life. Written with novelist B. Jeyamohan, the film is a slow-burning, realistic gangster drama, quite unlike Gautham Menon's urban romances. Silambarasan lost a great deal of weight to play the young Muthu, and A. R. Rahman's score includes the popular "Mallipoo".
