Viduthalai brings together three stars from two industries: Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth and Kannada star Vishnuvardhan. It is a Tamil remake of Feroz Khan's Hindi hit Qurbani (1980), and follows the same outline: a stylish thief and a widowed ex-convict form a deep friendship, both fall for the same woman, and both are drawn into a big heist and the plans of a dangerous criminal, while a senior police officer, played by Sivaji Ganesan, pursues them. Friendship, sacrifice and loyalty drive the drama. It is notable as one of the rare films pairing Rajinikanth with Vishnuvardhan, and as a late-career outing for Sivaji Ganesan alongside the younger stars.
