Shiva is a polished, sharp-witted young man who quietly steals from corrupt businessmen and politicians and uses the money for a home that shelters people with disabilities. He has a twin, Vishnu, a childlike man with a mental disability whose story holds the key to why Shiva became what he is. As the police close in and a powerful family he has wronged hunts for him, Shiva switches places, plays tricks and seems happy to be the villain of the piece, while a flashback slowly explains the betrayal that split the brothers apart. Ajith Kumar's double role, especially his performance as Vishnu, was widely praised and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Tamil. Vidyasagar's songs were popular, and the film was a major commercial success for the actor and for K. S. Ravikumar.
