Armaan Ali drives a car for a businessman in Mumbai and returns to his village near Hyderabad on leave, only to find that his daughter Muskaan cannot get clean water. He applies for a well under a government welfare scheme, and discovers that every official in the chain wants a cut, so that the well soon exists only on paper. Armaan and his daughter come up with an ingenious way to fight back, by reporting the "theft" of the well that was never built. Shyam Benegal's warm, gently satirical comedy takes aim at petty corruption in rural development schemes, with Boman Irani giving a charming lead performance in Dakhni-flavoured Hindi. It won the National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues.
