Karthik, an engineering graduate in Hyderabad who dreams of directing films, falls in love at first sight with Jessie, who lives upstairs in the house his family rents. She is a year older, from a strict Malayali Christian family, and determined not to fall for a Hindu boy. Karthik follows her to Kerala and slowly wins her heart, but her family and her own doubts keep pulling them apart, while his film career begins to take shape. Ye Maaya Chesave was shot simultaneously with Gautham Menon's Tamil Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, with Naga Chaitanya and Samantha in the leads. It was Samantha's debut, which won her a Filmfare award, and the couple later married in real life. A. R. Rahman's songs were huge hits.
