O. P. Nayyar

1926–2007

O. P. Nayyar never once used Lata Mangeshkar, which in the 1950s and 1960s was less a choice than a declaration, and he had hits anyway. His music swings - the rhythm is Punjabi, the tempo is faster than anyone else's, and the horse-hooves beat is his signature.

Naya Daur, Howrah Bridge, Kashmir Ki Kali, Mere Sanam, Phagun. Asha Bhosle sang most of it, and their partnership and its ending are a large part of the period's gossip. He is the only composer to win the Filmfare award without a Lata song in the film.

  • Lata Mangeshkar

A relationship defined by its absence: in a career of forty years O. P. Nayyar never recorded Lata Mangeshkar once. Asha Bhosle sings six of the eight songs in Sawan Ki Ghata and most of the nine in Mere Sanam, and that is the shape of every Nayyar soundtrack here.
