Ruby Myers
Silent-era superstar who later played character roles; credited as Sulochana · 1907–1983
Ruby Myers, who worked under the name Sulochana, was the first great star of Indian silent cinema, a Baghdadi Jewish woman from Pune who became its brightest and best-paid performer, and later received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She went on to play character roles, and in Sharmilee (1971) she is Aunt Rosie. She died in October 1983.
Two members of India's small Jewish community therefore appear on this site: Sulochana in Sharmilee and David, from the Bene Israel community, in Rocky Mera Naam. A second 'Sulochana' is credited in Taj Mahal (1963), as the governess; it is not settled whether that was Ruby Myers or the actress Sulochana Latkar, famous for playing mothers, so that credit is kept apart.
