Description
Ghetto Radio has been on 89.5 in Nairobi since December 2007 and bills itself as Kenya's number one Sheng station, Sheng being the Swahili-English street slang of the city, which has no ISO language code of its own. It was set up so that people living in Nairobi's slums could tell their own stories, through music, graffiti, blogs, news items and poetry, instead of having them told about them, and its own phrase for what it puts out is "street credible" news, views and entertainment. The day opens with Brekko, four hours of breakfast from six, which folds hourly news bulletins and paper reviews in with prank calls, a classroom feature and first plays of new Kenyan urban tracks. From there it moves through Changamka, Niaje Niaje, Sare Madre and Selection Za Old Skool into Gospel Night Live at seven in the evening and Jahmrock Doba later on. Reggae, dancehall, hip hop, gospel, Bongo Flava and Afrobeats all get their hours, and the 89.5 output also goes out as a live video stream for anyone watching rather than listening.
