Karuna is a devoted nurse in a city hospital who comes to love Dr. Sushil, the idealistic young surgeon she assists every day. He returns her feelings, but family obligations have already bound him to marry Kusum, the daughter of a family friend, and the marriage that follows brings jealousy and unhappiness to all three. Meena Kumari's restrained, aching performance is at the centre of this hospital-set romantic drama, with Raaj Kumar in one of his early leading roles and Nadira as the possessive wife. Shankar-Jaikishan's soundtrack is outstanding, above all Lata Mangeshkar's "Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh", one of the best-loved songs of Hindi cinema.
