Annapoorani grows up in Srirangam, the daughter of a cook who prepares offerings at the temple, and she has an extraordinary gift for flavour. Her dream is to train as a chef, which in her orthodox vegetarian household is unthinkable, because it means handling meat. With help from her friend Farhan she secretly enrols in a culinary school, rises through a top hotel kitchen and enters a national cooking contest, while facing a setback that threatens the very sense she depends on. Annapoorani was promoted as Nayanthara's seventy-fifth film. After release it drew complaints from some groups over scenes involving religion and food, and it was withdrawn from wide circulation for a time, which made it one of the most talked-about Tamil films of the season.
