Sudhir and Prashant have been inseparable since childhood, and Sudhir feels he owes Prashant's family a debt he can never repay. Both become doctors, but their paths diverge: Sudhir is quiet, principled and devoted, while Prashant is weaker and drawn to easy money. Sudhir's loyalty leads him to give up the woman he loves, Kavita, and then to shoulder blame that is not his, as the gap between the two friends widens. Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the director of Anand and Mili, adapted a story by Bengali writer Ashutosh Mukherjee, and Amitabh Bachchan gives one of his restrained, dramatic performances away from his angry-young-man image. R. D. Burman's songs include Lata Mangeshkar's "Ae Ri Pawan".
