Born into a poor Brahmin family in Kumbakonam, Srinivasa Ramanujan was obsessed with numbers from childhood, failed his college exams because he neglected every other subject, and struggled to find work as a clerk while filling notebooks with astonishing results. Letters to English mathematicians finally brought a reply from G. H. Hardy at Cambridge, and Ramanujan sailed to England, where his genius flowered even as the climate, the food and loneliness broke his health. Gnana Rajasekaran, who had earlier made Bharathi and Periyar, made the film in Tamil and English, moving between Tamil Nadu and Cambridge. Abhinay Vaddi, grandson of the star couple Gemini Ganesan and Savitri, plays Ramanujan, with Bhama as his young wife Janaki.
