Muthu is the cheerful, fiercely loyal charioteer and right-hand man of Raja, the young lord of a wealthy estate. When the two meet Ranganayaki, a spirited actress with a travelling drama troupe, Raja is smitten, but she falls for Muthu instead. The love triangle sets off jealousy, and scheming relatives waiting to grab the property turn Raja against his faithful friend. Driven out, Muthu learns a long-buried truth about his own family and the estate's past. A remake of Priyadarshan's Malayalam hit Thenmavin Kombath, Muthu became one of Rajinikanth's best-loved films, mixing comedy, romance, action and emotion. A. R. Rahman's songs, including "Thillana Thillana" and "Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali", were huge hits. Released in Japan in 1998 as "Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja", it became a phenomenon there and made Rajinikanth a star among Japanese audiences.
