Tamizh is a fearless street tough who joins the gang of Ali Bhai, a Dubai-based don whose men are at war with a rival gang for control of Chennai. His fists make him a star in the underworld, while he romances Shruti, an aerobics teacher, who is also being harassed by a corrupt police inspector. As the gangs' war heats up and a determined police commissioner closes in, Tamizh's secret reveals itself, turning the story on its head. Pokkiri is Prabhu Deva's Tamil remake of the Telugu blockbuster Pokiri, directed by Puri Jagannadh, and it became one of Vijay's biggest hits, with Vadivelu's comedy and Mani Sharma's songs adding to the fun. The same story was later remade in Hindi as Wanted with Salman Khan.
