Anand is contentedly married to Kavita, with a little girl they adopted and adore. Years earlier, on a train journey, he met Nandita, and the two spent one night together before going their separate ways. Now Nandita reappears in their town, and it emerges that the child Anand and Kavita adopted is the daughter she had to give up. As Nandita draws closer to the girl, Anand is torn between his wife, his daughter and the woman with whom he shares a secret. Dil Kya Kare ("what is the heart to do") was an unusual mainstream romance for Prakash Jha, better known for political dramas, and was produced by Ajay Devgn, who acted in it with his wife Kajol shortly after their marriage.
